MARTIN, Tenn. – Kevin Barfield of The University of Tennessee at Martin football team has been chosen as one of 34 returning Football Championship Subdivision kickoff returners to earn a spot on the 2013 College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list.
A 5-9 senior out of Memphis, Barfield ranked second in the Ohio Valley Conference in kick return yardage, averaging 24.5 yards per return. Overall, Barfield was responsible for 29 of UT Martin’s 42 kickoff returns, gaining 711 yards and a touchdown.
Barfield’s score came against Eastern Illinois on Oct. 6, when he took the game’s opening kickoff 93 yards to set the tone for the Skyhawks’ 51-37 victory. He also added a touchdown reception in the game against Eastern Illinois and hauled in a touchdown catch against Jacksonville State on Nov. 3.
Overall, the speedy Barfield racked up 100-yard return efforts in four games in 2012, including three straight against OVC opponents from Sept. 29-Oct. 13. He also took back a 99-yard kickoff for a touchdown against Tennessee Tech during his sophomore season.
For his career, Barfield has tallied 49 kickoff returns for 1,099 yards, an average of 22.4 yards per return. In addition, he has added 31 receptions for 423 yards and three touchdowns and nine rushing attempts for 79 yards.
Barfield is the fourth Skyhawk this summer to be recognized on a CFPA positional watch list, joining Jeremy Butler (wide receiver), Ben Johnson (linebacker) and James Satterfield (punter).
All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions and players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration. The 2013 CFPA FCS awards will be announced on Jan. 8, 2014.
