NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Brendon Caballero and Ben Reeves, two members of The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team, capped off strong performances this afternoon in the final round of the 65th annual SunTrust State Open Championship held at Gaylord Springs Golf Links.
In a tournament field that featured 156 professional and amateur golfers, Caballero finished in a tie for fourth (-1, first amongst amateurs) while Reeves turned in a 21st place finish (+3 overall, 12th amongst amateurs).
“Both of these guys represented UT Martin very well,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “They have both helped elevate the program and people around here know what UT Martin is all about after today.”
Coming off an All-Ohio Valley Conference sophomore campaign that saw him finish one stroke off of Medalist honors at the OVC championships, Caballero finished with a total of 212 (71 on Tuesday, 66 on Wednesday, 75 on Thursday). He birdied 12 holes for the tournament – including seven during the second round.
Reeves, who earned UT Martin’s first-ever OVC Freshman of the Year in 2012-13, carded six birdies for the tournament, playing smart, consistent golf throughout (two birdies in each round). He finished with a three-round score of 216 (72-72-72).
The first Tennessee Golf Association State Open was played in 1949 at Belle Meade Country Club. Garrett Willis (-6, 207 overall) of Knoxville brought home the 2013 TGA State Open championship, earning the prestigious Curtis Person, Sr. Trophy.
