MARTIN, Tenn. - Donley Canary, the head softball coach at The University of Tennessee at Martin, has announced that outfielder Carly Gonzales has inked a National Letter of Intent to join the highly decorated 2013 signing class.
A native of Anaheim, Calif., Gonzales made a name for herself by excelling at the prep level while being named Most Valuable Player and earning “Big Stick” accolades. The 5-5 Gonzales attended El Dorado High School in Placentia, Calif., where she played under head coach Melissa Chavez.
“Carly is a strong player with high defensive abilities along with a powerful arm that can patrol the outfield for us,” said Canary. “She is a true lefty that hits for power and can flood the gaps with extra base hits.”
Gonzales led the Golden Hawks with a .387 average while tallying two home runs, five doubles and 12 runs batted in as a senior. She hit a staggering .417 while smashing three home runs and driving in 14 as a junior while posting a commanding .683 slugging percentage and .470 on-base percentage. Her prep career at El Dorado was highlighted with three RBIs during a victory over Diamond Ranch and a perfect 2-for-2 game against La Serna in which the lefty scratched a double and hit a home run.
On the reasons why Gonzales chose UT Martin she stated that “I liked the town, coach Canary and the other members of the team”.
Canary is expecting Gonzales to step right in and make a big impact next spring as a freshman.
“After losing two senior outfielders, we have been looking for a player that can step in and challenge to fill the holes,” said Canary. “We believe that Carly has that ability and we expect for her to challenge for a spot from day one.”
Gonzales joins Brooke Kennedy (Bath Springs, Tenn.), Tayler Jerrick (Anahiem, Calif), Elizabeth Wiegand (Moscow Mills, Mo.), Gabby Glenn (Covington, Tenn.), Renate Mecki (Oconomowoc, Wis.), Taylor Manning (Long Beach, Calif.) and Bella Zizzi (Cross Plains, Tenn.) in UT Martin’s signing class.
