BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - The Ohio Valley Conference announced this afternoon that Kenzi Tate, a 5’ 7” sophomore third baseman/pitcher on The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team, has been named the league’s adidas Player of the Week.
This is the first career Player of the Week honor for Tate, UT Martin’s season leader in batting average (.359), hits (55), doubles (12), home runs (11), RBIs (48) and total bases (100).
A native of Opdyke, Ill., Tate helped guide the Skyhawks to their third straight OVC victory last Saturday – a 14-5 win over Southeast Missouri. The victory resulted in a two-way tie for fourth place in the final OVC standings, as UT Martin claimed the No. 5 seed in the upcoming OVC Tournament.
In the weekend series at Southeast Missouri, Tate maintained a staggering .667 batting average while registering two doubles, a home run and six RBIs in the series. Tate led the team with six hits in the doubleheader sweep of Southeast Missouri. She drove in six runs while posting a 1.222 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage. She had three RBIs in back-to-back games on Saturday. In the circle, Tate tallied her 17th win on the season while striking out three in 5.1 innings of work.
UT Martin secured the No. 5 seed in this week’s OVC Tournament, which will take place at Williams Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University on May 8-11. The Skyhawks first appearance in the tournament will be on Wednesday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m., facing the No. 4 seed Murray State Racers.
