SOFTBALL SKYHAWKS HIT THE ROAD FOR SEASON FINALE AT OVC RIVAL SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team is set to head to Cape Girardeau, Mo. to close out Ohio Valley Conference play and the regular season. The Skyhawks will use this series as their final tune up before next week’s OVC Tournament set to begin on Wednesday. Game 1 of the three game series is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday with the second game of the doubleheader to begin shortly after. The Skyhawks and Redhawks will face off in the season finale on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Southeast Softball Complex.

UT Martin (31-18, 12-10 OVC) will look to build upon their 2-1 win over OVC leader Eastern Illinois to earn the series split last weekend as the Skyhawks reach the home stretch and prepare for the OVC Tournament. With a good showing, the Skyhawks could each as high as the No. 4 seed in next week’s tournament.

The Skyhawks are paced by sophomore Kenzi Tate’s .340 batting average, 10 home runs and 42 RBIs. Classmate Lauren Smith is hitting a respectable .302 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs.

Senior Leah Taylor leads the team with a program-tying 37 stolen bases along with a .297 batting average, career-best eight home runs and 25 runs batted in. Taylor was just recently named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District first team for her outstanding accomplishments in the classroom.

Inside the circle, the Skyhawks rely heavily on LHP Casey Vincent (13-8, 2.38 ERA) and RHP Tate (16-5, 2.62 ERA) to carry the workload. Vincent leads the team with 25 starts, 17 complete games and two saves. Vincent has struck out 113 batters while only issuing 38 walks. Tate leads the team in wins and has tallied three shutouts. The sophomore duo has combined to pitch 287 of the teams 340.2 innings while holding opponents to a .250 batting average.

Southeast Missouri (15-31, 6-16 OVC) is led by junior Alexis Anderson with a .400 batting average along with six home runs and 19 RBIs. Simone Patterson leads the team with nine home runs while Taylor Cowan paces the squad with 27 RBIs. In the circle the Redhawks look to Cowan (7-21, 3.88 ERA). Cowan leads the team with 32 starts and 14 complete games in 168 innings pitched.
