MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell behind early and could not recover until the late innings, falling 7-3 to Morehead State at Skyhawk Field today.
Despite being hit with the loss on the mound, the Skyhawks were led this afternoon by sophomore Taylor Cox (0-4), who fired a career-high seven innings and allowed two earned runs for the second straight start. Also hitting for himself, Cox picked up a pair of hits – including a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for his first career longball.
“It really says something about Taylor that he can swing the bat that well after not doing it regularly for almost two years,” UT Martin head coach Bubba Cates said. “But he’s athletic enough to do that and he was a good hitter in high school.”
Grant Glasser (3-for-5) and Hagen Nelson (2-for-3 with an RBI and walk) also led UT Martin offensively. Byron Johann and Luis Paublini each scored a run for the Skyhawks (10-28, 3-17 Ohio Valley Conference).
Trevor Lundgrin pieced together his second straight scoreless relief appearance on the mound, allowing zero hits in the eighth inning. John Houston (one inning, one run) also saw time on the mound for UT Martin today.
Morehead State got on the scoreboard with two unearned runs in the first inning. The Skyhawks would get leadoff singles in both the first and second innings but couldn’t cut into their deficit.
After the first, Cox cruised over the next three innings. He retired the side in nine pitches in the second, chalking up a pair of strikeouts. He then pitched around a one-out double in the third to put up another zero on the scoreboard. In the fourth, the Eagles threatened but Cox was able to escape without harm after inducing an inning-ending groundout.
Morehead State added four more runs (two unearned) in the fifth, but Cox recovered to shut the Eagles down in both the sixth and seventh innings.
The Skyhawks would get two baserunners aboard in the seventh but couldn’t push across a run. UT Martin broke through in the eighth, as Nelson drove in Johann with an RBI single to make the score 6-1.
After Morehead State got one run back in the top of the ninth, Cox tried his best to ignite a rally in the bottom-half of the inning. Paublini drew a one-out walk and moments later, Cox drove a 1-1 pitch the opposite way for a two-run jack. However, a pitching change followed and the Skyhawks could not produce another baserunner.
These two teams will wrap up their series at Skyhawk Field on Sunday, April 21 at 1 p.m.
