MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s rodeo team piled up a program-best 1,110 points on its way to a convincing victory at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, Miss. over the weekend.
The UT Martin men’s team won by 770 points in a dominant performance from start to finish. The women’s squad accumulated 130 points to finish in a tie for fourth place.
For the second straight rodeo, Tyler Waltz finished first in the average (150) in bareback riding after placing second in the first go (73) and first in the short go (77).
Five UT Martin riders competed in the tie down roping event, led by Clark Adcock (second with a 19.1 average, 10.4 first go, 8.7 short go). Jordan Thrasher (20.2 average, fourth place) led after the first go with a 9.7 and tallied a 10.5 in the short go. John Alley (10.8) and Clay Brewer (11.4) were fifth and sixth after first go while Clay Mitchell finished sixth in the short go with a score of 12.7.
On the women’s side, Natalie Fletcher ranked second after the first go (2.8) in breakaway roping before finishing sixth in average. Jacy Thrasher split third and fourth in the first go (3.2) and ended fifth in average.
UT Martin had three of the top four cowboys in steer wrestling. Led by a first place showing in the short go (3.9), Will Lummus’ 8.8 average was the top performance. Thrasher’s average of 9.3 (4.8 first go, 4.5 short go) was good enough for second place while Robert Joyce placed fourth with an average of 11.1 after rounds of 4.6 and 6.5.
In goat tying, Lauren Wagner finished fourth in average (16.3) while Meredith McDonnell placed fifth in the first go (7.2).
Alley and Adcock brought home first place accolades in team roping, winning the average (12.9) after leading in the first go (6.0) and short go (6.9). Ben Walker joined forces with Troy’s Zach Mabrey to finish fourth in average (23.9) while Clay and Lane Mitchell ranked second after the first go (6.5) before finishing fifth in average.
Mary Francis Gorsuch and Kelley Wigington each turned in strong performances in barrel racing to round out UT Martin’s successful outing. Gorsuch led after the first go (14.64) and ended second with a 28.56 average. Wigington’s consistency (14.41 first go, 14.56 short go) led to a third-place finish in average (28.97).
UT Martin will host the 45th annual Spring College Rodeo at the Ned Ray McWherter Agricultural Pavilion on April 11-13. Action begins at 7:30 p.m. on all three nights.
