MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin swept all four categories and Most Outstanding Performance awards in a complete victory over Minnesota-Crookston on Friday at the Ned McWherter Ag Pavilion on Senior Day.
Overall the Skyhawks won 13-2, boasting 7-1 wins in hunterseat and 6-1 wins in western. UT Martin swept the horsemanship and equitation by a 4-0 margin.
“This meet was a great confidence boost for our team heading into next week’s tournament,” UT Martin head coach Meghan Cunningham said. “We said goodbye to our seniors. What a great day for Kara Bergenty with two MOP’s. Congrats to Laurel and Megan Marie with their MOP’s as well for outstanding efforts.”
In Equitation, Mykaela Vanselus was responsible for the biggest margin of victory, posting a 72-59 win. Hunter Ralston was not too far behind with her 81-70 win, while Kara Bergenty earned MOP accolades after an 80-71 triumph. Kaylan Herbst rounded out the sweep with a 70-63 win.
Reid Rickett tallied a 67-55 win in Equitation over Fences, while Bergenty earned MOP honors with an 80-69 victory. Katie Miranda (74 points) and Nora Wilson (75) also contributed to the Skyhawk point total.
Ellzey accounted for a 73.5-67 win in Horsemanship, chalking up MOP honors in the process. Michelle Chulock earned a 71.5-69 victory, while Amy Guenther registered a 71.5-69.5 win. Candice Fulcher capped off the sweep, winning 71-68.5.
In Reining, Megan Marie Foley brought home MOP honors. Seniors Chulock (68.5) and Fulcher (65.5) tallied points to complete the highly successful day for UT Martin.
This meet closes out the regular season for the Skyhawks, who will host a nonconference invitational tournament next weekend. UT Martin will hot Fresno State, New Mexico State and South Dakota State at the Ned McWherter Ag Pavilion at 10 a.m. on March 22-23.
“This week we are all business getting ready for hosting the Skyhawk Invitational, which will be the first-ever NCEA nonconference tournament,” Cunningham said. “Our athletes have been at a disadvantage with a lack of postseason conference prior to our national championship. This is a huge event for our team and our campus – we would love for the community to come out and support us.”
UT Martin has earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will play No. 3 Fresno State while No. 1 seed South Dakota State takes on No. 4 New Mexico State. T-shirt and Wendy’s giveaways, as well as “Pet the Pony” activities will take place on Saturday.
