MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team will honor its four seniors before its match against Minnesota-Crookston in the regular season finale on Friday, March 15. The meet will start at 11 a.m. in the Ned McWherter Ag Pavilion on campus.
Skyhawk head coach Meghan Cunningham and assistant coach Ashley Thompson will recognize Kara Bergenty, Michelle Chulock, Candice Fulcher and Katie Miranda prior to the start of the contest. All four seniors are four-year letterwinners in the UT Martin program.
A Farmington, Conn. native, Bergenty is a hunter seat rider who has competed for the Skyhawks in both Equitation on the Flat and Fences during her four years at UT Martin. In Equitation on the Flat she holds a 19-13 record with three Most Outstanding Performer awards. Over Fences, she holds a 21-17 record with an astounding seven MOP’s.
Bergenty was awarded All American honorable mention honors in Equitation Over Fences in 2012 for her record of 8-2 with 2 MOP’s. This run also has her holding the single season record for highest average score of 78.5. She was also awarded the Team’s Most Outstanding Player in 2012 and the National Collegiate Equestrian Association Student Athlete of the Month for Jan. 2013.
Bergenty has served as team captain and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee representative for equestrian. She has been named to the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for three consecutive years. Her academic dedication has also landed her on the Academic All American list for the NCEA.
Bergenty is the daughter of Darren and Mary-Anne Bergenty and sister to Justin, Ryan and twin, Coryn, who rides for Auburn. She will be graduating with a degree in health and human performance.
Chulock is a western rider who has competed for the Skyhawks in both Horsemanship and Reining, as well as Equitation on the Flat during her four years at UT Martin. She has 13 wins in Horsemanship with two MOP nominations. In Reining, she holds an 11-11-1 record with a pair of MOP awards. She has served as team captain during the 2012-2013 season.
Prior to UT Martin, Chulock was Congress Champion in Equitation Over Fences and placed in the top-five at the AQHYA World show and top-10 in Working Hunter.
A Sarasota, Fla. native, Chulock is the daughter of Larry and Beth Chulock. After completing her degree in marketing, she will continue her education at UT Martin while serving as a graduate assistant for marketing in the Skyhawk athletic department.
A western rider who has competed for the Skyhawks in both Horsemanship and Reining, Fulcher has 13 wins in Horsemanship with one MOP award. She currently holds the UT Martin career-high for average score in horsemanship with a 70.48 average. In reining, she has compiled 14 career wins.
Fulcher, from Mason, Ohio, has represented the team as captain as well as served on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. She has also worked diligently in assisting with fundraising and organizing team service projects.
Before UT Martin, Fuclher was top-five at the Ohio State Fair in Hunter Under Saddle and in the top-10 at the All American Youth Show in the same event.
Fulcher is the daughter of David and Kara Fulcher. She will graduate with a degree in the department of agriculture, geosciences and natural resources.
Hailing from Summerfield, Fla., Miranda is a hunter seat rider who has competed for the Skyhawks in Equitation Over Fences. She has 11 wins under her belt with a current record of 5-4-1 while holding an impressive current average score of 79 for the 2012-13 season. She represented UT Martin in 2013 at the Winter Equestrian Festival Equitation Challenge in Wellington, Fla.
Miranda notably worked at Graves Stables where she took much pride in caring for the teams’ horses and facilities. She is the driving force behind getting horses show-ready for competitions.
Before coming to UT Martin, Miranda competed at Pony Finals, finished third in Zone 4 for Children’s Jumpers, qualified and competed at the USEF Medal and Maclay Finals and won the USEF Medal at Maclay Regionals.
Miranda is the daughter of Jimmy and Meg Miranda and sister to Jessica and Jeffrey. Upon graduation, she is moving to Lexington, Ky. to pursue a veterinarian career.
Next weekend, UT Martin will host the Skyhawk Invitational on March 22-23. The two-day event will begin at 10 a.m. each day and will include Fresno State, New Mexico State and South Dakota State. Free t-shirt giveaways and pony activities will also take place during the tournament.
