MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team opens Ohio Valley Conference play when it hosts the Jacksonville State Gamecocks for a weekend set on March 8-10 at Skyhawk Field. First pitch times are set for 4 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 and 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 10.
This marks the third time in the last four seasons that the Skyhawks will open league play against the Gamecocks. UT Martin will look to continue its success at home this weekend, as all five of its wins in 2013 have come at Skyhawk Field. This series continues a stretch where the Skyhawks play 10 of 11 games in front of the home fans.
UT Martin (5-7) has won five of its last seven games but is coming off a tough 9-0 loss at Arkansas State on Tuesday. Against the perennial Sun Belt Conference powerhouse, senior third baseman Matt Haynes tallied a pair of hits to pace the Skyhawk offense. On the mound, six UT Martin hurlers combined to fan 10 batters, which marks the sixth time in 12 games this season where the Skyhawks have registered double-digit strikeout totals in a game.
Against Jacksonville State, UT Martin has announced Dan Tobik (0-1, 4.61 ERA), Taylor Cox (0-0, 1.15) and Dalton Potts (2-0, 3.38) as its scheduled starting pitchers. Tobik boasts one of the best strikeout ratios on the team (14 in 13.2 innings), while Cox has allowed one earned run or less in all three starts this season. Potts is tied for the team lead with two victories and is coming off a five-inning, two-run performance in his first start of the season last Monday against Mid-Continent.
The Gamecocks (6-8) roll into Martin on a three-game winning streak, including a 1-0 win at Alabama State on Wednesday night. In that game, OVC hits leader Griff Gordon drove in a run in the top of the third and the Gamecock pitching staff conceded just five hits on their way to the second shutout of the season.
Casey Antley (3-0, 3.22) will start Game 1 of the series for Jacksonville State, while Taylor Shields (2-1, 2.18) will take the mound on Saturday. The Gamecocks’ Game 3 starter is yet to be determined.
