MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team begins the 2013 season on the road this weekend against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions out of the Southland Conference. Game times are set for 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 and 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17.
The 2013 edition of the Skyhawks features 21 upperclassmen - including 13 seniors. Overall, UT Martin returns 23 players, including seven starters on offense and 10 pitchers.
Offensively, senior outfielder Grant Glasser will look for a repeat of his success last season. The 5-9 leadoff hitter hit .293 to go along with a .383 on-base percentage last season, swatting 10 doubles on his way to 29 runs scored. The Skyhawk offensive attack also returns senior outfielder Matt Young (.287 in 2012), junior first baseman Phil Sorensen (.265, 26 RBI) and 2012 Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomers Nico Zych (.277) and Sonny Mastromatteo (.243).
On the mound, the Skyhawks will throw senior right-hander Dan Tobik in Game 1, followed by sophomore southpaw Taylor Cox on Saturday and senior righty Alex Boshers on Sunday. All three projected starters logged at least 20 relief appearances in 2012. Tobik posted a 2.78 ERA with 66 strikeouts in 55 innings last season, while Cox fanned 21 batters in 25.1 innings as a freshman in 2012. Boshers ended last season as a starter and boasts 19 career starts.
Southeastern Louisiana received votes in a pair of national preseason polls. The Lions were selected second in the preseason Southland Conference standings after they return 17 lettermen from a squad that went 39-21 last year.
Senior outfielder Harry Slade (.294 in 2012) is the top returning offensive player for Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions also return pitchers Andro Cutura (6-1, 3.30 ERA, 2012 Southland Freshman of the Year) and Dylan Hills (9-4, 1.64 ERA out of the bullpen in 2012).
Senior left-hander Jordan Hymel (6-3, 2.65 ERA in 2012) will get the starting nod in Game 1, followed by junior righty Sean Kennel (0-1, 9.82 ERA) in Game 2. Freshman right-hander Tate Scioneaux will start the series finale.
