Tournament Game Notes
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will open its 2013 season Friday in the Southeastern Louisiana Jimmy John’s Lion Classic. The team will play five games in three days.
“We have a lot of questions that need to be answered about our team, and this tournament is a good way to get those answers,” UT Martin head coach Donley Canary said.
The three biggest questions all surround vacancies created by the graduation of catcher Erica Duke, pitcher Chelsea Jones and shortstop Jenny Bain.
“We will play a lot of people, and look for as many answers as possible,” Canary said.
This is the eighth consecutive season the Skyhawks have played in the Lions Classic. A year ago the Skyhawks went 3-2 in the tournament and won the Ohio Valley Conference regular season, the OVC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA regional tournament.
The Skyhawks are 24-7 all-time in the tournament and won the non-conference tournament twice with a perfect 5-0 worksheet (2006 and 2010).
“We are excited to play in some decent weather,” Canary said. “The girls are excited about playing too.”
While Canary and the Skyhawks will use the tournament to get answers, winning is still important to the team. “You want to do the best you can to build momentum and confidence,” the coach said.
