GOLFERS BATTLE RAIN, ELEMENTS TO FINISH SIXTH AND EIGHTH IN MURRAY STATE INVITATIONAL

Murray State Invitational Results

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s golf team battled the weather and the elements at the annual Murray State Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course Monday and Tuesday to earn a sixth-place finish with a two-round 585.

“I was real proud of my golfers,” UT Martin head golf coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We had to battle the rain all day Monday, and then we played until it was dark.”

The Skyhawks entered two teams in the 14-team tournament that was scheduled for three rounds, but then reformatted to two rounds after the rain on Monday.

Sophomore Brendon Caballero finished tied for tenth in the tournament with a two-round 143. The Brentwood native shot 2-over par in the first round which was completed early Tuesday.

Freshman Ben Reeves finished tied for 17th in the tournament with a two-round146. Reeves shot even-par 71 in the first round and 4-over in the second round.

Tyler Shellnut and John Michael Sisinni each shot a two-round 149, while freshman Tyler guy carded a two-round 151.

The UT Martin B team finished eighth in the tournament with a two-round 596. Taylor Deming led the squad with a two-round 141. He was one stroke off the tournament lead which resulted in a six-player, four-hole playoff. Lipscomb’s Blanton Farmer won the tournament. He shot 1-under in both the first and second round and them won the playoff.

Deming shot even-par in the first round and then wrapped up the tournament Tuesday with a 1-under par.

Graham Sleigh shot a two-round 148, while Clay Harbin shot a two-round 150. Redshirt freshmen Austin Smith from Sharon, playing in his first collegiate tournament, carded a two-round 157.

Union University won the tournament with a two-round 568, while Ohio Valley Conference foes Murray State finished third; Belmont was fourth and Morehead State was seventh.

Union’s victory put an end to Murray State’s eight-year domination of the tournament.

The Skyhawks will return to action Monday, Oct. 8, when they host the Skyhawk Invitational at Paris Landing State Park.
