September 30, 2012

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s golf team returns to action Monday morning when it opens play in the Murray State Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky.

Teams will play 36 holes Monday. Action gets under way with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The teams will play 18 holes on Tuesday, with a shotgun start set for 9 a.m.

Measuring 6,601 yards from the championship tees, the par-71 layout has two distinct nines which require a wide array of shot-making. The outward nine is set on hilly terrain and requires pinpoint accuracy from tee to green, whereas the inward half rewards length and accurate long iron play.

The longest hole on the course, the par-five 17th, is 535 yards long, while the shortest hole is the par-three 16th, measuring 171 yards. Professional manicured bent grass greens are surrounded by 54 sand bunkers, with three scenic water hazards also coming into play. The fairways feature automatically watered Bermuda grass.

The Skyhawks finished fourth in this past year’s Murray State Invitational. Tyler Shellnut led the Skyhawks with a three-round 214. He was seventh in the tournament.

Murray State has won the MSU Invitational for the past eight years.

The Skyhawks enter the tournament, after a second-place finish in the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-Off Tournament. Shellnut led UT Martin with a three-round 210. He was second in the tournament. Sophomore Brendon Caballero was one stroke back at 211 and finished third in the tournament.
