MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team continues its Ohio Valley Conference slate on Saturday, Sept. 29 when it travels to Tennessee Tech for a match scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
The Skyhawks (5-11, 1-2 OVC) swept the season series from Tennessee Tech last season, taking a pair of 3-1 decisions. Emily Keaton slammed down 10 kills in each match while Kasey Elswick averaged 35 digs per match to lead the UT Martin defense.
Saturday’s match will be the fourth straight OVC road match for the Skyhawks. Last weekend, UT Martin split with SIU Edwardsville (lost 3-0) and Eastern Illinois (won 3-1) to open conference play before falling 3-1 at Southeast Missouri on Tuesday. In that match, the Skyhawks recorded 19 kills and a .361 hitting percentage while taking the first set before Southeast Missouri came back to win the next three sets. Keaton’s 11 kills paced UT Martin, while Amanda Crask handed out 32 assists and Kasey Elswick scooped up 17 digs.
As a team, the Skyhawks lead the OVC in service aces (1.62 per set) and rank second in digs (16.28 per set). Lynsey Hazelwood leads the team in kills (133, 2.66 per set) and ranks second in the league in aces (0.42 per set). Defensively, Elswick ranks atop the OVC list in digs (5.61 per set) while Shelby Hoskins’ 38 blocks lead the squad.
Tennessee Tech enters the weekend with a 2-13 overall record and 0-3 conference mark. The Golden Eagles have fallen at Murray State (3-0) and Austin Peay (3-1) while dropping a home match against Jacksonville State (3-0) on Tuesday.
Kelsey Gray leads the OVC in blocks (1.30 per set) and ranks second in hitting percentage (.313) to lead the Golden Eagles. Natalie Penrod leads the team with 2.46 kills per set while Ashleigh Hancock (4.79 assists per set) and Madison Comperry (3.38 per set) split time at setter. Courtney Smith has tallied 244 digs and is second in the league behind Elswick in that category (5.19 per set).
