UTM Game Notes
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will take its four-game winning streak on the road with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, Feb. 8. Tipoff from McBrayer Arena is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CST.
The Skyhawks (12-12, 8-4 OVC) have seen an uptick in play over the last couple weeks, winning five of its last six contests including a big home victory over Murray State their last time out. UT Martin would fall behind by 18 points in the first quarter before tying the contest right before halftime and eventually pulling away down the stretch for an 85-67 victory. The rally ranked as the largest comeback attempt for the Skyhawks in a victory since overcoming a 16-point deficit against Samford on Jan. 17, 2003.
Playing a big part in the comeback victory was the play of sophomore standout Kendall Spray. Spray was named College Sports Madness National Mid-Major Player of the Week along with earning unanimous adidas OVC Player of the Week honors after scoring a game-high 34 points. The game marked the fifth time in her career in which she tallied at least eight made three-pointers in a contest and the third of the season. Spray currently sits just eight made three-pointers off the program’s single-season record while ranking second nationally with 97 made threes on the season.
The contest also pits two of the league’s best head coaches in OVC history. UT Martin is under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan who ranks fifth in OVC history with a 166-114 overall mark in nine seasons while Eastern Kentucky’s Chrissy Roberts ranks 10th with a career record of 119-162 in her 10th year.
Eastern Kentucky (7-14, 4-8 OVC) is looking to get back to its winning ways after dropping four consecutive OVC matchups against Austin Peay, Murray State, Belmont and Tennessee State. The Colonels are led by the league’s top newcomer in A’Queen Hayes who has notched weekly honors by the OVC seven times this season by pacing the squad with 15.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
Thursday’s matchup marks the 54th meeting between the two programs in series history with Eastern Kentucky holding a 31-22 advantage. Despite the series disadvantage, the Skyhawks have won 12 of the last 13 matchups against the Colonels – including a 77-49 victory on Jan. 11 in Martin.
