The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team competed in the Ohio Valley Conference Championships this past weekend with several Skyhawks earning postseason accolades.

Five Skyhawk shooters garnered a total of eight awards over the weekend. Senior Joe Martin was named All-Conference first team in both smallbore and air rifle while sophomore Kaitlin Korinek earned All-Conference second team in smallbore. Freshmen Celia Gelpey, Jacob Osborne and Kaylen Royal were tabbed to the All-Newcomer team for air rifle while Gelpey and Royal also picked up All-Newcomer awards in smallbore.

“It was a good weekend with getting to see our competitors from Murray State, Jacksonville State and Morehead State,” said head coach MJ Vowell. “The team did a good job by giving us solid days in both smallbore and air rifle. We had one standout with Joe Martin as he shot a personal-best 590 in air rifle. All in all, I’m very proud of our kids with their weekend performances.”

The mixed team was led in smallbore by Martin’s score of 580 followed by Korinek (577), Jennifer Plocinik (564), Alex Tamboli (560) and Andre Delcalzo (554). Martin (590) paced the Skyhawks in air rifle as well while Korinek (584), Tamboli (573), Plocinik (571) and Osborne (561) also fired in the discipline.

While the women’s team did not compete as a squad, several of the members shot as individuals. Gelpey (562), Brianna Sawyers (554) and Royal (542) fired in smallbore. In air rifle, Sawyers (568), Gelpey (567) and Royal (566) all put up solid scores.

“It has been a good season,” said Vowell. “We had our ups and downs as any team has but overall we were pretty steady. We came close a couple of times to breaking our team aggregate record. The student-athletes put in a lot of hard work over the year. I saw good growth with some of the younger players, and I look forward to next season.”

UT Martin will compete at the NCAA Qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 17, which will be held in Murray, Ky.
