KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team took on the No. 26 ranked team in the nation today at the Goodfriend Tennis Center as the Tennessee Lady Vols claimed 4-0 and 7-0 wins against the Skyhawks.

All eight UT Martin players competed today, including junior Andrea Plantada’s season debut. The Skyhawks (0-3) battled throughout the day against the nation’s best in just the third and fourth meeting between these two schools in the all-time series history (also playing in 1983 and 2016).

In the first match of the day, Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter narrowly fell 6-2 at No. 1 doubles while the all-freshman duo of Mizuki Sakurai and Jule Streif battled before a 6-3 setback at No. 2. Amelia Campbell joined forces with Plantada in a tight battle at No. 3 as Tennessee led 5-3 before the clinching point.

Streif and Campbell were each defeated 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Sakurai battled tough at No. 5 before falling 6-2, 6-0 to clinch the match for the Lady Vols. The Skyhawks were embroiled in three hotly contested matches that went unfinished as Plantada (2-6, 5-1 at No. 6), Potter (6-6 at No. 2) and Jumamukhambetova (3-6, 0-3 at No. 1) were each finding a groove for UT Martin.

During the backend of the doubleheader this afternoon, Tennessee won the doubles point via wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Jumamukhambetova and Potter also competed at No. 1 and were down 4-2 before the match could finish.

The Skyhawks showed a vast improvement in singles play, taking 23 games from Tennessee. Elina Geut fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 before Potter was defeated at No. 2 by a 6-2, 6-2 margin. Streif competed at No. 3, falling 6-0, 6-3 while Olha Burak fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. Campbell put up a fight at No. 4 before falling 6-2, 6-3 while Jumamukhambetova was edged by a 6-3, 6-2 margin after going toe-to-toe with Tennessee’s No. 1 player.

UT Martin continues its challenging nine-match road trip to start the 2018 spring campaign with a match at in-state rival Middle Tennessee on Friday, Feb. 9.
