The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team hopes to build upon the program’s season-long three-game winning streak with an “Orange Out” matchup against Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State on Saturday, Feb. 3. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 4 p.m. and serves as the front end of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men’s team.
The Skyhawks (11-12, 7-4 OVC) are riding a hot hand heading into the weekend matchup having posted its highest scoring output and largest margin of victory against a Division I foe this season with a 100-66 victory against Austin Peay. In the contest, the Skyhawks would knock down 13 three-pointers in the contest while shooting 53.4 percent from the floor. With the victory, UT Martin improved to 49-10 in the month of February under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan.
Four player scored in double figures for the Skyhawks against Austin Peay as sophomore Kendall Spray led all players with a game-high 25 points while knocking down seven three-pointers. Spray continues a season filled of high octane offense, ranking second nationally with 89 made three-pointers while sitting tied for sixth in program single-season record book. Joining in the Spray in double figures was the duo of Myah Taylor (18 points) and Zaire Hicks (12 points) with 30 combined points off the bench while Emanye Robertson tallied 11 of her own.
Murray State (8-14, 4-7 OVC) enters the contest alternating wins over the past month while dropping its last contest at Southeast Missouri, 80-70, on Thursday evening. In the outing, senior standout and OVC Preseason Player of the Year Ke’Shunan James joined the exclusive 2,000-point club with a double-double performance of 20 points and 10 rebounds. James leads the team in all four statistical categories including points (20.7), rebounds (8.5), assists (3.9) and steals (2.1) per game. Bria Bethea also averages in double figures with 15.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
Saturday’s matchup marks the 85th meeting between the two programs in series history with UT Martin holding a 50-34 advantage. The Skyhawks have won 10 of the last 11 matchups dating back to the 2012-13 seasons – including a 97-80 road victory on Jan. 6.
