The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will open a homestand which will feature five of its next six games at home as the Ohio Valley Conference schedule turns over by hosting Austin Peay on Thursday, Feb. 1. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and serves as the front end of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men’s team.
The Skyhawks (10-12, 6-4 OVC) enter the matchup playing some of its best basketball of the season after winning three of their last four, all of which coming on the road. During the lengthy road trip the Skyhawks would hold their opponents to just 56.2 points per game while outscoring their opponents by an average of 11.3 points and limiting their opposition to just 33.9 percent shooting from the field. In the team’s most recent outing, UT Martin overpowered Tennessee Tech to close the road swing with a 67-51 victory.
UT Martin has seen its offensive balance come to fruition as of late with five players averaging in double figures during conference play. Sophomore Kendall Spray leads the team with 15.9 ppg against conference foes while sitting in ninth place on the program’s single-season three-point list with 82. Junior Emanye Robertson (11.9 ppg), Ashton Feldhaus (11.7 ppg), Chelsey Perry (10.4 ppg) and Janekia Mason (10.2 ppg) are all averaging in double figures.
Austin Peay (12-9, 5-5 OVC) enters the contest looking to get back to its winning ways despite dropping four of its last six contest. Most recently, the Governors split their pair of games last week by picking up a victory against Eastern Kentucky (59-45) before falling short to Morehead State (66-59). The Govs are led in scoring by Brianne Alexander (10.5 ppg) and Falon Baker (10.4 ppg).
Thursday’s matchup serves as the second matchup between UT Martin and Austin Peay of the season and 87th overall dating back to 1970. Austin Peay holds a 46-40 series advantage while winning two of the last three head-to-head matchups – including a 69-62 victory on Jan. 3. While the Governors have held their own against the Skyhawks, UT Martin has still managed to come out victorious in 11 of the last 14 games while holding an eight-game winning streak in the Elam Center against Austin Peay.
