MARTIN, Tenn. – After two solid weeks on the road, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team returns to the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center for a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference rival Austin Peay on Thursday, Feb. 1. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m., following the women’s game as the backend of an OVC basketball doubleheader.
The Skyhawks (8-15, 3-7 OVC) will look to avenge an early season loss to the Governors, as Austin Peay claimed a 75-69 win in Clarksville back on Jan. 4. In that game, UT Martin battled back from a 13-point deficit to tie the score with 4:40 to go. However, the Governors responded with an 8-0 run over the next 1:39 on their way to the win. Matthew Butler posted a game-high 23 points while Fatodd Lewis and Delfincko Bogan each provided 12 points for the Skyhawks, who were a perfect 14-for-14 from the charity stripe.
UT Martin faced a similar situation last Saturday at Tennessee Tech, as the Skyhawks turned an 18-point hole into a tie ballgame with 4:36 remaining. The Golden Eagles followed with six straight points before posting a 63-55 win. Bogan paced UT Martin in scoring for the third consecutive game, tossing in a game-high 17 points to go along with a career-best six rebounds.
The Skyhawks have won their last three games against Austin Peay at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center, having not lost since March 1, 2014. UT Martin boasts a 21-7 home record in OVC play since the start of the 2014-15 campaign.
Austin Peay (12-10, 7-3 OVC) is coming off a home sweep of Eastern Kentucky (90-84) and Morehead State (92-76) last week. Terry Taylor (21.0 points, 8.0 rebounds per game) was named adidas OVC Freshman of the Week while Averyl Ugba (15.5 points, 12.0 rebounds per game) captured adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week accolades.
Taylor (9.5) and Ugba (9.3) rank first and second, respectively, in the OVC in rebounding against conference opponents. As a whole, the Governors pace the league and rank ninth nationally in offensive rebounding (13.95 per game).
