MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team begins preparing for the 2018 campaign with the start of official team practice on Friday, Jan. 26.
UT Martin is coming off its best year in Division-I history as the Skyhawks put together a 25-win season and made its first Ohio Valley Conference Tournament appearance since 2011.
Interim head coach Ryan Jenkins is set to steer the program in his first season at the helm. UT Martin will feature a solid mixture of veterans and newcomers in the pursuit of another postseason berth.
The Skyhawks feature a well-rounded group of players as second baseman Tyler Albright led the squad in on-base percentage last season (.422) and boasted an impressive .343 batting average. Outfielder Creighton Eldridge paced the team in triples (six) and walks (29) while also boasting a .548 slugging percentage last year.
On the bump, UT Martin showed great promise last season as the Skyhawk pitching staff set several program highs. Dalton Westfall led the way in opponent batting average (.261), innings pitched (80.2 innings) and strikeouts (81). After several injuries plagued the UT Martin pitching staff, righties Peyton Cain and Winston Cannon filled the void and proved to be extremely solid options as both ranked second on the team with 10 starts.
The Skyhawks will be preparing for battle before the first pitch of the season against Troy on Feb. 16.
