MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team went toe-to-toe with a regionally ranked Memphis squad this evening but the Skyhawks dropped a 7-0 decision at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
UT Martin competed throughout in doubles action, led by a near-win at No. 1. Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter gave it their all but narrowly fell by a 7-6 margin to the Tigers’ top-ranked duo. Amelia Campbell and Mizuki Sakurai teamed up at No. 3, falling 6-3. Olha Burak and Jule Streif joined forces at No. 2 and dropped a 6-1 decision.
In singles play, Jumamukhambetova battled but fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. Potter (No. 2), Elina Geut (No. 5) and Burak (No. 6) each put up a fight before dropping 6-1, 6-2 decisions in their respective head-to-head matchups. Campbell fell 6-0, 6-2 while being slotted at No. 4 while Streif came up short with a 6-0, 6-1 setback at No. 3.
“Considering we have a young team and we have had two days of practice, our team played well,” Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. “Tonight was the first night our team was able to hit on a real tennis court. We saw some good things out there.”
UT Martin returns to action with a pair of matches at Tennessee. The Skyhawks will take on the Lady Vols at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2 at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
