The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will return to the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center with a pair of home contests this week, beginning with a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, Jan. 11. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks (6-10, 2-2 OVC) return home after splitting a pair of conference road matchups at Austin Peay and Murray State. In the squad’s most recent contest, UT Martin posted its highest offensive output against a Division I program this season in a 97-80 victory while also notching the team’s first road win of the year. Four different Skyhawks scored in double figures in the contest, led by sophomore Kendall Spray’s game-high 24 points while fellow Preseason All-OVC selection Ashton Feldhaus scored a season-high 19 points while going perfect 8-for-8 from the field.
UT Martin is led offensively by Spray who averages 17.3 points per game while ranking as one of the nation’s most prolific three-point shooters. Spray enters the matchup second nationally in three-point field goals per game (4.00), fourth in three-point field goals made (64), 10th in three-point field goals attempts (142) and 21st in three-point field goa percentage (45.1). Junior Emanye Robertson also averages in double figures, averaging 12.4 points per game while ranking fifth in the OVC in both assists and steals.
Eastern Kentucky (5-8, 2-2 OVC) has split both weeks of the early conference season, picking up victories over Tennessee Tech and Eastern Illinois while falling to Jacksonville State and SIUE. The Colonels are led by a pair of new faces in junior A’Queen Hayes and Bria Bass. Hayes recently notched her fourth OVC Newcomer of the Week honor after recording back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 23 points 13.5 rebounds last week. Meanwhile, Bass was recently named the league’s Freshman of the Week after averaging 20.5 points and 4.5 rebounds.
Thursday’s matchup marks the 53rd meeting between the two programs with Eastern Kentucky holding a 31-21 series advantage. UT Martin has commanded the series as of late, winning 11 of the last 12 matchups dating back to the 2009-10 season.
