The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will make the short trek across state lines to challenge Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State on Saturday, Jan. 6. Tipoff from the CFSB Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. for the front-end of a doubleheader with the men’s squad.
The Skyhawks (5-10, 1-2 OVC) struggled mightily in their last contest, dropping their second of back-to-back losses in a 69-62 road matchup at Austin Peay. In the contest, the Governors would jump out to a lead as large as 17 points in the first half before ultimately watching the Skyhawks make a late push to take a lead on the first possession of the fourth quarter. The lead would be short-lived – for 21 seconds to be exact – before Austin Peay strung together a 12-0 run which proved to be enough distance to secure a victory.
UT Martin boasts two players who average in double figures in sophomore Kendall Spray and Emanye Robertson. Spray paces the squad with 16.8 points per game, including a league-leading 58 made three-pointers. Robertson – who is averaging 15.0 points per game in league play – ranks second on the team with 12.5 points, 4.2 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game.
Murray State (5-9, 1-2 OVC) enters the matchup having dropped its last two conference outings, falling short in home matchups against both SIUE (75-70) and Southeast Missouri (85-74). The Racers are led by preseason OVC Player of the Year Ke’Shunan James with 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game to rank amongst league leaders in all three categories. The junior duo of Bria Bethea (15.2 ppg) and Abria Gulledge (10.1 ppg) also average over double figures for the Racers.
Saturday’s matchup marks the 84th meeting between the two programs in series history with UT Martin holding a 49-34 advantage. UT Martin swept the season series last season while winning nine of the last 10 games dating back to the 2012-13 season. The Skyhawks last loss at Murray State came on Jan. 4, 2010.
