BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference recognized a pair of University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball standouts today, as sophomore Kendall Spray was named adidas Co-Player of the Week and Chelsey Perry earned adidas Freshman of the Week accolades after a pair of strong performances. In additional to her OVC accolades, Spray was also named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Today’s announcement marks the first time since Jan. 31, 2017 that two different Skyhawks pick up an OVC honor on the same week. Ashton Feldhaus (Player) and Chelsey Perry (Freshman) was the last UT Martin tandem to accomplish that feat.
Spray, a native of Lebanon, Tenn., earned her second consecutive Player of the Week honor after averaging 24.5 points per game last week to lift the Skyhawks to a split. Against No. 4 Louisville, she tallied 14 points – including four three-pointers – to notch her fourth straight game in double figures. She pushed that streak to five consecutive games against Rhodes College where she broke the program’s single-game three-point record by going 11-of-18 from beyond the arc en route to a career-high 35 points. The 11 three-pointers made ties the top NCAA single-game high for the season. She also shot 50 percent from the floor while tallying three assists in the contest. Spray currently leads the country in three-point field goals made per game with 4.7 and ranks second in three-point field goals made with 42.
Perry, a native of Middleton, Tenn., nearly averaged a double-double for the week with 12 points and nine rebounds per game. Against No. 4 Louisville, Perry led all Skyhawks with 15 points while tying her previous season-high with seven rebounds. Later in the week in a win over Rhodes, she tallied nine points while setting a new career-high with 11 rebounds. Perry has excelled in her opening season, starting in nine games while scoring in double figures in five contests.
UT Martin returns to action in the Basketball Travelers Inc. Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. hosted by Purdue beginning this weekend. The Skyhawks will matchup against Saint Mary’s (Dec. 17), Purdue (Dec. 18) and Eastern Washington (Dec. 20).
