NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin track squads opened the indoor track season with its first meet of the season at the Vanderbilt Opener over the weekend.
The Skyhawks got their first taste of competition with a full squad competing at the Vanderbilt Fieldhouse on Saturday. Facing off against some of the best teams regionally, the Skyhawks posted several personal records along with a school record.
In the 60m dash, the Skyhawks boasted four new PRs. On the men's side the dual-sport athlete pair of Joseph Este (7.07) and Porter Streator III (7.23) both notched new career-bests in the meet. Meanwhile on the women's side the duo of sophomore duo of Ivana Cherry (8.18) and Maya Brown (8.24) also posted PRs.
Sophomore Malia Sanders was strong as well in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.78 for a new PR.
Picking up distance a tad, Leonel Perez - an OVC Outdoor Championship medalist - notched a new school-record with a time of 1:54.67 in the 800m event. Joining in the action was freshman Jhon-Wes Walker with a time of 1:57.01.
Rounding out the team's top performers was Agok Ayuen who posted a PR mile time of 5:23.
"It was great to get out on the track and open up the indoor season after a strong cross country performance," said UT Martin coach Peter Dalton. "It was fun having our track and distance runners together again in competition. The athletes have trained well in offseason and we are excited about the true track season ahead."
UT Martin will return to regular completion on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the John Craft Invite hosted by Eastern Illinois.
