UTM Game Notes
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will make a trek across the Volunteer state for a matchup at fellow system member Chattanooga on Saturday, Dec. 2. Tipoff from McKenzie Arena is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.
The Skyhawks (3-3) are looking to build upon back-to-back home victories over the past week with wins over Western Carolina (62-54) and North Carolina A&T (76-63). In the two contests, the 16th ranked UT Martin defense has combined to force 55 turnovers while limiting opponents to just 6-of-33 from beyond the arc.
In the Skyhawks most recent contest, UT Martin jumped out to a lead as large as 26 points before settling on a 13-point victory after forcing 23 turnovers while shooting 46 percent from the floor as a team. Leading the way for the home squad was the guard duo of sophomore Kendall Spray and junior Emanye Robertson. Spray flirted with a career-high after tying a personal-best with eight made three-pointers while totaling 30 points in the victory. Pushing the offensive tempo was Robertson from the point position, scoring 14 points while dishing four assists and notching three steals. Freshman Maddie Waldrop joined in the action by posted a career-high with 12 points while adding five rebounds.
UT Martin boasts a balanced offense which features four players in double figures. Spray leads all scorers and ranks fifth in the OVC with 16.7 points per game. Robertson ranks second on the team with 11.0 points per game while junior Myah Taylor (10.8 ppg) and freshman Chelsey Perry (10.5 ppg) rounds out the quartet in double figures.
Saturday's contest pits two elite head coaches in UT Martin's Kevin McMillan and Chattanooga's Jim Foster. McMillan ranks fifth in OVC history with an overall record of 157-105 in nine season. The veteran Foster has compiled a 891-337 career mark in 40 seasons while posting a 108-30 record in five years at Chattanooga.
Chattanooga (5-3) enters the weekend matchup having won five consecutive games after a championship performance at the Challenge in Music City - including wins over Northwestern, Georgetown and Auburn. The nation's 25th ranked scoring defense has proved stingy this season, allowing an average of just 54.2 points per game - including an average of 42.0 ppg over the past three contests.
The Mocs are led by reigning SoCon Player of the Week Keiana Gilbert who paces the squad in both scoring and rebounds with 14.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. The squad also boasts two other players who average in double figures in Aryanna Gilbert (12.0 ppg) and Lakelyn Bouldin (11.8 ppg).
This marks the 14th meeting between the two sister-schools in series history with Chattanooga holding an 11-2 advantage. The Mocs have won three consecutive games in the matchup with the Skyhawks last victory coming on a neutral court in 1997.
