MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin softball coach Donley Canary has announced the addition of five players to the program’s 2018 recruiting class during the early signing period. The Skyhawks have announced the signing of Erin Gallagher (Suwanee, Ga.), Chelsey Gore (Lexington, Tenn.), Georgia Land (Ethridge, Tenn.), Kallie Pickens (Jackson, Tenn.) and Alexis Ray (Louisville, Ky.) to national letters of intent.
“I am really excited about this class of young ladies,” said Canary. “This is an outstanding class that fits all of our needs because of what we have graduating after this season. We have some talented depth along with strong arms in the pitching area.”
Erin Gallagher – P, 5-10, R/R, Fr., Suwanee, Ga. (North Gwinnett HS)
Gallagher joins the Skyhawks from North Gwinnett High School where she plays for Randy Black. Gallagher posted an 8-5 overall record with a 2.30 earned run average and 49 strikeouts in 70.2 innings of work as a senior. Helped the team to a 7A state championship as a junior with an overall record of 28-7. In 2017 the team were Sweet 16 state finalists. Was named the Gwinnett Prep Sports Fans Choice Fall Athlete of the Week after striking out seven batters while notching a pair of RBIs en route to a victory over Duluth.
Chelsey Gore – INF, 5-6, S/R, Fr., Lexington, Tenn. (Scotts Hill HS)
Gore joins the Skyhawks from Scotts Hill High School where she plays for Tyler Sowell. Gore posted a .444 batting average during her junior campaign before suffering a season-ending injury. During her sophomore campaign she helped lead the Lady Lions to program history with a first-ever berth into the Class A state tournament. She posted a .433 batting average with eight doubles, six triples, 20 RBIs, 51 runs scored and 32 stolen bases as a sophomore to earn All-State honors by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association. For her career, Gore has tallied 49 RBIs and 80 stolen bases.
Georgia Land – C, 5-4, R-R, Fr., Ethridge, Tenn. (Lawrence County HS)
Land joins the Skyhawks from Lawrence County High School where she plays for Brian Land. Land led the Lady Cats to District and Region championships in 2017 after tallying a .449 batting average along with nine home runs, 45 RBIs and six stolen bases. For her strong play, she earned All-District 8AAA honors as both a sophomore and junior. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, she is ranked top-5 in her class while serving as a member of the 100 Club, National Honor Society and Distinguished Scholar Award.
Kallie Pickens – INF, 5-9, R/R, Fr., Jackson, Tenn., (University School of Jackson)
Pickens joins the Skyhawks from University School of Jackson where she plays for Brian Dunn. Pickens was named to the All-West Tennessee softball first team after tallying a .506 batting average with 33 runs scored, 14 doubles and six home runs as a junior. For her career she has posted a .419 batting average with 15 home runs and 106 RBIs. Was named the Division II-A West Region MVP after going 5-for-8 with three RBIs and five runs scored in the final two games of the tournament, lifting the Lady Bruins to their seven region title in eight years. She was also named to the Tennessee Sports Writers Association and Tennessee Softball Coaches all-state teams.
Alexis Ray – P, 5-9, R/R, Fr., Louisville, Ky. (Mercy Academy)
Ray joins the Skyhawks from Mercy Academcy where she plays for Brian Kindell. Ray posted a dominating season with a 30-7 overall record while compiling a 1.20 earned run average and 305 strikeouts in 280 innings of work. Named to the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association 3A All-State second team. A four-year starter, Ray earned three all-district, one all-region and one all-state tournament honor. Off the field she received three all-state academic honors.
