BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – After a strong opening weekend to the 2017-18 season, University of Tennessee at Martin graduate transfer Dominique Williams nabbed adidas Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week accolades today.
Williams, who is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at UT Martin after graduating from Radford University, is the first Skyhawk to win OVC Newcomer of the Week honors since Twymond Howard on March 2, 2015.
A 6-6, 205-pound forward, Williams averaged 20.0 points on 61.5 percent shooting (16-for-26) to go along with 5.5 rebounds per game in tight losses against a pair of 20-win teams from last season in Marshall (102-91 in overtime) and at Illinois (77-74). He also shot 60 percent (3-of-5) from three-point land and canned 83.3 percent of his free throw attempts (5-for-6).
On Friday, Williams came off the bench to lead UT Martin with 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting at Marshall. The Washington, DC native sank a trio of three-pointers – including a big one at the regulation buzzer that forced the contest into overtime. He also chipped in six rebounds and a steal in 37 minutes played.
Williams was then inserted into the starting lineup against Illinois on Sunday. He was responsible for 15 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal in 37 minutes. After UT Martin trailed by 16 points with 3:48 remaining, he tossed in six points during an 18-5 run that got the Skyhawks back within striking distance with a chance to send the game into overtime.
Williams’ scoring average ranks fifth in the OVC while he also ranks in the top-five in the league in minutes played (37.0 per game, fourth) and in offensive rebounding (3.0 per game, fifth).
UT Martin holds its 2017-18 home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 15 when it plays host to the North Carolina Central Eagles. Tipoff time from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
