MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin sophomore standout Edwin Kurgat will continue his stellar campaign after becoming the program’s first athlete to complete at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships to be ran at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday, Nov. 18.
A native of Edloret, Kenya, Kurgat has been no stranger to standout performances. Kurgat recently finished eighth overall at the NCAA South Regional hosted by Alabama with a PR time in the 10k event of 30:28.0 to earn All-Region honors. Just two weeks ago in the OVC Cross Country Championships Kurgat earned the program’s first Male Athlete of the Championship award after pacing a 104-runner field with a first place finish with an 8k time of 23:59.8 to also notch All-OVC first team honors.
In addition to his championship performances, Kurgat has been strong throughout the season. Practically rewriting the record books, Kurgat has posted unparalleled success in his two season, notching six of the top seven times in school history while earning three OVC Male Runner of the Week honors along with a National Division I Men’s Cross Country HERO of the Week accolade this season alone.
Kurgat will now look to improve upon his school-record setting 8k time of 23:40.96 posted earlier this season at the Greater Louisville Classic – the site of the NCAA Cross Country Championship.
