SIU Game Notes
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will officially open the regular season with a short trek to regional rival and Missouri Valley Conference foe Southern Illinois on Friday, Nov. 10. Tipoff from SIU Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Skyhawks enter the season looking to get back to their winning ways after a year of transition which saw the program notch its first losing season in seven years with an overall record of 12-19 and 8-8 league mark. Highlighting the season was the play of Kendall Spray, Myah Taylor and Ashton Feldhaus who are each Preseason All-OVC selections.
Spray was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year after leading the team with 12.5 points per game, ranking as the league’s highest scoring freshman. She burst onto the scene by sitting as one of the nation’s top three-point shooting threats by ranking 27th nationally in three-point field goals per game (2.87) and 30th in three-point field goals made (89). Spray was joined on the All-OVC second team by both Taylor and Feldhaus who averaged 12.1 and 11.0 points per game, respectively.
In the Skyhawks lone exhibition of the preseason, UT Martin defeated Lindsey Wilson College 97-42. In the contest it was Spray who led the way with 27 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals as the Skyhawks shot 54.2 percent from the field and forced 36 turnovers. The freshman duo of Chelsey Perry (16 points) and Zaire Hicks (15 points) also scored in double figures while all 10 available players saw approximately 20 minutes of action and joined in the scoring column.
UT Martin is led by head coach Kevin McMillan who enters his ninth season at the helm. McMillan has posted a 154-102 overall record throughout his collegiate career while ranking as the OVC’s fifth winningest coach and active leader.
Southern Illinois enters the season having posted a 16-15 overall mark and 10-8 record in MVC play a season ago. The Salukis return leading scorer Kylie Giebelhausen who averaged 13.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game last season. In the team’s most recent exhibition against Lindenwood-Belleville, four different Salukis scored in double figures with freshman Abby Brockmeyer leading the way with 15 points while Celina VanHyfte (15), Kristen Nelson (10) and Makenzie Silvey (10) also joined in the action.
The game marks the 19th meeting between the two regional foes with UT Martin holding a narrow 10-8 series advantage. The Skyhawks have won five of the last six matchups against the Salukis with the team’s last loss at SIU Arena coming on Nov. 29, 2001.
