MARTIN, Tenn. –
Abbie Hopkins and Tess Baumann, both freshmen at the University of Tennessee at Martin, were recognized as United Equestrian Conference Riders of the Month today. Hopkins brought home Equitation Over Fences accolades while Baumann chalked up Horsemanship honors.

The Skyhawk tandem of Hopkins and Baumann are the fifth and sixth UT Martin representatives in school history to earn UEC Rider of the Month mentions. The pair has helped the Skyhawks reach the national top-10 for the first time since 2015, as UT Martin has settled into the National Collegiate Equestrian Association standings for the last five weeks.

This marks the second award for Hopkins in the last week, as she was named Equifit NCEA Equitation Over Fences Rider of the Month for October on Nov. 2. The freshman out of Seekonk, Mass. was 2-for-2 in MOP’s last month – securing a score of 84 points against No. 8 TCU and an 87-point effort against No. 10 Delaware State.

Hopkins ranks as the team leader in MOP’s (two) and team points (two) in equitation over fences, producing an average score of 83 points.

Baumann also stepped up big for the Skyhawk Western squad last month, as the Redmond, Wash. native also dialed up back-to-back MOP’s against No. 8 TCU and No. 10 Delaware State. She started things off with a 73-point ride against TCU on Oct. 6 before notching a 74-point effort one day later at Delaware State.

On the season, Baumann leads UT Martin in MOP’s (two), team points (two) and average score (73) in horsemanship.

The No. 10 Skyhawks close out the fall this week when they take part in the Masterson Farms Invitational Hosted by UT Martin. The Skyhawks are slated to take on No. 5 Fresno State on Thursday, Nov. 9 and will be pitted against either No. 4 SMU or Delaware State on Friday, Nov. 10.
