TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Consistently matched up against some of the biggest heavyweights in the collegiate tennis forum, the University of Tennessee at Martin held its own at the 30th Roberta Alison Fall Classic hosted by the University of Alabama.

The Skyhawks came away with eight victories in the two-day tournament, six of which came in singles play. Six different UT Martin players earned at least one win in the event, defeated players from such schools as USC, Clemson, Indiana, USF and DePaul.

“As you can see by the other teams in the tournament, we were defiantly playing amongst the NCAA giants this weekend,” Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. “But the one thing that impressed me the most about our girls was that they were not intimidated in the least. We went through the things that we have been working on and because of that, the little Skyhawk David slayed a few Goliaths.”

Four different Skyhawks claimed wins in doubles play, advancing to the consolation championship round in two separate flights. Asel Jumamukhambetova teamed up with Jemima Potter to defeat the DePaul team of Lenka Antonijevic/Aspasia Avgeri by a 6-4 margin while Amelia Campbell and Jule Streif earned a 7-5 victory over Simone Parn/Oana Trus from Lane University.

Jumamukhambetova continued her momentum in the singles round, turning away Constance Brantine from USC with relative ease (6-3, 6-2) in her opening matchup. The junior from Atyrau, Kazakhstan followed with a narrow tiebreaker setback against Alba Cortina-Pou (7-6, 6-7, 5-10) before bouncing back to defeat Laura Marti from Clemson by a 1-6, 7-6, 10-8 margin in the third-place matchup.

The Skyhawk duo of Potter and Mizuki Sakurai competed in the same draw and each advanced to the consolation championship but did not play each other because they are from the same school. Potter posted a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 win over USF’s Marcela Ifju while Sakurai advanced via a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 victory against Anna McCoy of Indiana.

Olha Burak advanced to the consolation championship match in her flight, dispatching Margo Muller from Alabama State by a 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 margin. Streif also picked up a singles win with a 2-6, 7-6 (12), 10-8 victory over Parn from Lewis in her draw.

UT Martin opens its spring season on Jan. 19 when it visits in-state rival Memphis.
