CHARLESTON, Ill. –
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s cross country team tied the program’s second-best finish with a fifth place performance at the Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championship hosted by Eastern Illinois on Saturday morning.

UT Martin tied the program’s second-best finish in school history with its fifth place finish, ranking only behind the squad’s fourth place finish in the 1995 championship. With the team’s strong performance, the Skyhawks qualify as a team for the NCAA South Regional.

Leading the way for the Skyhawks and narrowly missing out on All-OVC honors was sophomore Kara Martin with an 16th place finish with a time of 17:51.8. Joining in the action with strong performances was the trio of Amelia Martin (18:09.1), Nelly Kandie (18:15.1) and Agok Ayuen (18:31.5) which each posted personal-bests. Meanwhile freshman Lydia Lee wrapped up the team’s scoring with a time of 18:45.7.

Also competing in the championship was sophomore Sydney Larkin, sophomore Natalie Motor, senior Kiana Hope, junior Cherie Wilson and junior Chantal Wilson.

“This team has faced a lot of challenges this season but I’m proud of the way the ladies ran today,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “The scoring pack was tight and once again surpassed preseason predictions. I’m proud of how they have come together.”

UT Martin will now turn their focus to the NCAA South Regional on Friday, Nov. 10 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
