BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Hunter Richardson was spotlighted as the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Co-Golfer of the Week today, marking the third time this season and 12th time in his University of Tennessee at Martin career that the senior has earned the league’s top weekly honor.
Richardson’s 12 career OVC Golfer of the Week accolades are tied for the second-most in league history with former Belmont golfer Ashton Van Horne. Former Jacksonville State golfer Tomasz Anderson holds the all-time record for most OVC golf weekly accolades with 14.
The award comes after Richardson helped UT Martin post its first win of the 2017-18 season at the Skyhawk Fall Classic held at Paris Landing State Park in Buchanan, Tenn. He was part of a UT Martin squad who carded the best score in each of the three rounds (290-287-283) on its way to a 15-shot victory over second-place Murray State.
Richardson placed second in the field of 76 golfers, finishing just one shot off the individual lead with a 211 (-5). Improving his score from each round (74-70-67), the Clarksville, Tenn. native shot up the leaderboard on the final day by producing eight birdies in the third round alone. That included a span where he sank seven birdies in his first 10 holes on the day to set the tone for his 67, which was the best score of any golfer for any round in the tournament.
For the tournament, Richardson ranked in the top-3 in the field in birdies (15, second), par-4 scoring average (3.97, third) and par-5 scoring average (4.50, third). He also tallied an eagle during the second round to help the Skyhawks lead wire-to-wire throughout the 12-team event.
Richardson, who secured his 18th career top-5 finish at the Skyhawk Fall Classic, currently leads the OVC with a 70.4 scoring average through 12 rounds this season.
UT Martin resumes its fall schedule on Oct. 16-17 when it partakes in the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate held at Greystone Golf Course in Dickson, Tenn.
