NEW ORLEANS, La. –
For the second time this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s cross country team has been ranked 14th in the NCAA South region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

With the nation’s Division I cross country programs split into nine geographical regions, UT Martin competes in the South Region which includes the states of Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

UT Martin picked up the men’s second regional ranking of the season after a strong performance at the Greater Louisville Classic this past weekend. Highlighting the event was another record-setting performance by dynamic sophomore Edwin Kurgat. Competing against some of the nation’s best programs, Kurgat notched a ninth place finish with a record-setting 8k time of 23:40.96 to shatter his previous record set two weeks ago by 19 seconds.

With one top-10 finish in the bag, the Skyhawks continued to pile on with strong performances by all of the team’s contributors. Seven different Skyhawks set personal records in the meet to further display the program’s growth throughout the season. The grouping of Ryan Ford, Brian Chelide, Austin Rogers, Andrew Dodson, Daniel Smith, Lenny Baumann and Marcos Macias excelled. As a whole, the men’s squad averaged a team time of 25:52, trimming 48 seconds off the team’s cumulative average from a year ago.

The Skyhawks will return to action in its final tune-up before the OVC Championship with an appearance at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Friday, Oct. 13.
