MADISON, Ill. – A pair of sophomores produced the best finishes of their careers to help the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team place second out of 17 teams at the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational.
Jack Story placed third with a 209 (-4) while redshirt Ross Redmont’s 212 (-1) in the field of 95 golfers. Story’s previous best finish was 10th at the Skyhawk Fall Classic last season while Redmont came in 14th at the 2015 Skyhawk Fall Classic for his previous high finish.
As a team, UT Martin shot a 291 (+7) today to finish the tournament with a total of 860 (+8). It was the second time in three tournaments that the Skyhawks finished as runner-up in 2017-18 as UT Martin led the tournament in par-5 scoring (4.77, -14) and eagles (two). Host SIUE won the tournament with an 841 (-11).
“We finished strong today,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “Jack had an eagle and we had four birdies as a team on the last two holes. It was tough out there today with high winds and the tee markers were pushed back on a few holes. Everybody chipped in today and we moved up a spot in the standings from yesterday. I’m proud of our team.”
Story and Redmont each posted a team-best 70 (-1) during today’s third and final round. Story dialed up three birdies while his eagle came on the par-5, 545-yard Hole No. 18. The Dickson, Tenn. native ranked first in the tournament in par-5 scoring (4.33, -8). Redmont accounted for two birdies and 15 pars today to cap off a team-best 12-birdie performance in the tournament.
Hunter Richardson posted the most birdies (four) of any Skyhawk today on his way to a 74 (+3). Nick Wolf’s 77 (+6) completed the team scoring while Cameron Smith shot an 82 (+11) this morning.
Competing as individuals, Ryan Davis posted a 75 (+4) for the second straight round while Tate Chumley followed right behind with a 76 (+5).
For the tournament, Richardson compiled a score of 221 (+8) while Wolf registered a 224 (+11). Smith (229, +16) wrapped up the scoring for the UT Martin starting lineup while Davis (223, +10) and Chumley (231, +18) finished fourth and eighth, respectively, amongst the scores by individuals.
The Skyhawks’ next competition is the first of two home tournaments this season as UT Martin proudly hosts the Skyhawk Fall Classic on Oct. 2-3. Once again, the event will take place at Paris Landing State Park in Buchanan, Tenn.
