MADISON, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team performed well today at the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational, as the Skyhawks rank third out of 17 teams after the first two rounds at Gateway National Golf Links.
UT Martin shot a 289 (+5) in today’s opening round before bouncing back for a solid 280 (-4) during the afternoon round. The Skyhawks rank second in the field in par-3 scoring (3.18, +9), par-5 scoring (4.73, -11) and overall pars (113) while trailing Bradley (566, -2) by three shots for second place. Host SIUE holds the lead with a 553 (-15) performance through 36 holes.
“The thing that was impressive about our team today is that we finished strong on the last four or five holes,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We made a bunch of birdies late and that’s how this team is going to be – not everybody is going to have their best round and the others will pick you up. All of our guys played well – we had a great day today.”
Sophomore Jack Story paced the Skyhawks today, as he ranks fifth out of 96 participants with a 139 (-3) – just three shots off the individual lead. The Dickson, Tenn. native posted a 72 this morning before carding a 67 (-4) during today’s afternoon phase.
Ross Redmont posted an eight-shot improvement today, as he began his day with a 75 before accounting for a 67 during the afternoon round. His 142 (E) is good enough for 12th place in the individual standings through two rounds while he is tied for the most birdies (10) in the field.
Hunter Richardson was responsible for a team-best 70 (-1) this morning before following with a 77 this afternoon – finishing with a 147 (+5). Cameron Smith (76-71) and Nick Wolf (72-75) also posted a 147 (+5) today to complete the team scoring for UT Martin. Smith dialed up an eagle in the first round, doing the job on the par-5, 557-yard Hole No. 13.
Competing as individuals, Ryan Davis (73-75; 148) and Tate Chumley (75-80; 155) also represented the Skyhawks today.
The third and final round is set for an 8:15 a.m. CT shotgun start on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Chumley is paired with Valparaiso and Drake while Davis is grouped with representatives from Murray State and Bradley. The scoring five for UT Martin is set to tee off alongside members of SIUE and Bradley.
