IDEMUDIA, FAIR CAPTURE ADIDAS OVC VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
September 25, 2017
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jemima Idemudia and Megan Fair, both of the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team, were spotlighted by the Ohio Valley Conference today as part of the league’s weekly honors. Idemudia picked up adidas Offensive Player of the Week while Fair was named the adidas Newcomer of the Week for the second time in as many weeks.
It was also announced on Tuesday that Fair received the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Volleyball Player of the Week award. That marks the first TSWA honor by a UT Martin volleyball player this season.
Idemudia becomes just the sixth different Skyhawk to earn OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors and first since Ashley Doherty accomplished the feat on Sept. 19, 2011. The 6-2 middle blocker from Glendale, Ariz. also won adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week honors twice as a junior in 2016.
A 6-0 outside hitter from Conover, NC, Fair becomes the first player in school history to bring home OVC Newcomer of the Week accolades in back-to-back weeks. She is just the third player in program history to be recognized as the league’s Newcomer of the Week.
The duo assisted UT Martin to a sweep in its OVC-opening weekend, as the Skyhawks downed Southeast Missouri and Tennessee Tech by 3-1 margins at home. As a direct result, UT Martin started conference play with a perfect 2-0 record for just the fourth time in school history and first time since 2011.
Idemudia was a force at both ends for the Skyhawks, slamming down 27 kills (3.38 per set) on a sizzling .480 attack percentage to go along with nine blocks (1.12 per set). The senior committed only three attack errors in eight sets last week, starting off with an 11-kill, four-block effort in Tuesday’s four-set victory over Southeast Missouri. Three days later against Tennessee Tech, she hit .577 (16 kills, one error) in 26 swings to go along with five blocks to aid UT Martin to another four-set win.
On the season, Idemudia ranks fifth in the OVC in blocks (1.02 per set), seventh in attack percentage (.308) and 10th in points (3.45 per set).
Fair continued her fine stretch of play by hitting .333 while dialing up 29 kills and 31 digs in the two conference triumphs, accounting for a pair of double-doubles. On Tuesday against Southeast Missouri, the junior piled up 11 kills on a .286 attack percentage while adding 13 digs in the 3-1 win. She followed that with 18 kills (against just two errors) on a .364 attack percentage and a career-best 18 digs in the four-set win over Tennessee Tech on Friday.
In OVC play, Fair ranks in the top-10 in kills (3.62 per set, ninth), points (4.00 per set, ninth) and digs (3.88 per set, 10th).
The Skyhawks return to action with a pair of home matchups this weekend, hosting Murray State at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 and Austin Peay at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
