MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time since the 2013 season, the University of Tennessee at Martin football team has been rewarded for its strong play to start the season by cracking into the national rankings at No. 24 in the STATS FCS Top 25 on Monday afternoon.

UT Martin is one of three Ohio Valley Conference schools ranked in the STATS Poll, joining Jacksonville State (No. 5) and Tennessee State (No. 20). This marks the Skyhawks first appearance in the STATS FCS Poll since appearing at No. 22 on Sept. 30, 2013.

The Skyhawks (2-1) are coming off a dominating 21-7 road victory at No. 15 Chattanooga in their last contest. In the game, UT Martin controlled the tempo on both sides of the ball after scoring on the second drive of the game, eventually pushing its lead out to as large as 21 points and holding the Mocs without a first down late into the third quarter. As a whole, the Skyhawks limited the Mocs offense to just 150 total yards while allowing just six rushing yards – a Division-I opponent low since 2011.

UT Martin has featured wins over Clarion University and Chattanooga in the young season, with the team’s only setback coming at Southeastern Conference foe Ole Miss. Currently the Skyhawks rank in the top-25 in 23 statistical categories nationally including sixth in third down conversion defense (20 percent), seventh in rushing defense (51.0 ypg), eighth in redzone defense (55.6 percent) and eighth in time of possession (34:38).

Additionally, the Skyhawks lead the OVC in sacks against (two), rushing defense (51.0 ypg), pass efficiency (137.4), kickoff coverage (41.6 ypg), opponent third down conversion (20.0 percent), time of possession (34:38) and redzone defense (55.6 percent).
