MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team is set to open Ohio Valley Conference play with a pair of home matches, hosting Jacksonville State on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. and Southeast Missouri on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.
The Skyhawks look to find a similar result from last season’s Jacksonville State match on Oct. 9 as UT Martin picked up a 2-1 win. The Skyhawks also boast a successful home past against both these opponents. UT Martin is 5-1 in its last six home matches and is undefeated (2-0-1) against Southeast Missouri in home matches since 2012.
UT Martin currently ranks first in the OVC in shots (177) and saves (47) while ranking second in assists (14) and points (40).
Juniors Amy McGivern and Danae Kaldaridou picked up a goal each on Wednesday in the 2-1 victory over Jackson State as freshman Isabella Roberts tallied her first two assists as a Skyhawk.
UT Martin outshot Arkansas State 22-13 on Friday but fell 2-0. The Skyhawks were able to muster 17 total shots in the second period but could not net the goals needed to put the Red Wolves on their heels.
On Sunday, UT Martin nearly stole a match from Western Carolina. The Skyhawks found themselves down early but came back with two unanswered goals to force overtime, ultimately dropping a 3-2 decision to the Catamounts. Freshman Alice Adams netted her first collegiate goal and Katelyn Colvin recorded a goal as well in the heartbreaker. Kaldaridou was able to tally a career-high two assists while freshman goalkeeper Erica Myers tied her match-high in saves (eight).
Several Skyhawks have made a name for themselves during nonconference play. Colvin currently ranks ninth in the nation and is tied for first in the OVC in assists with five on the season. McGivern paces the conference in shots (37) with a program high of 14 coming in a single match back on Sept. 1 against Chattanooga.
Jacksonville State (3-3-2) is led by Danielle Monroe who ranks first on the squad in shots (21) and goals (five). Kayla Thompson has also provided help for the Gamecocks as she has three assists and a goal of her own. Goalkeeper Caroline Robinson (26 saves, 1.42 GAA) has played all 760 minutes on the season for head coach Neil Macdonald who is in his fifth season at Jacksonville State.
The Redhawks (3-4) are led by Maggie Pike and Maddy Cornell, both of whom have tallied two goals on the year. Kindra Lierz (18 saves, 1.17 GAA) has played a majority of the time between the goal posts. Southeast Missouri head coach Heather Nelson has coached the Redhawks to five OVC regular season championships and two OVC Tournament championships in her 13 years at the helm.
