MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team begins its season at the 14th annual Murray State Invitational held at Miller Memorial Golf Course on Sept. 11-12.
This tournament is the first of seven scheduled events this fall and 13 overall tournaments for head coach Jerry Carpenter and the Skyhawks in 2017-18. UT Martin is one of 13 teams in the field that also involves Bethel, Chicago State, Evansville, Green Bay, John A. Logan, Missouri Baptist, Morehead State, host Murray State, Southern Indiana, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State and Western Illinois.
Miller Memorial Golf Course is a par-71 course that plays at 6,601 yards. The first round starts with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, Sept. 11 and will be followed by the second round later that afternoon. The third and final round of the 54-hole event is slated to begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
The Skyhawks return six players from last year’s squad that led the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring average (292.1), Three-time All-OVC performer Hunter Richardson led the OVC in scoring average (71.3) in 2016-17 as the senior from Clarksville, Tenn. has won medalist honors in eight career tournaments – including each of the last two OVC Championships.
Joining Richardson in UT Martin’s starting lineup at Murray State is four underclassmen. Ross Redmont carded the lowest round (66) of any Skyhawk last season at the Murray State Invitational before an injury forced him to take a medical redshirt. The sophomore from Memphis, Tenn. will look to recapture his form from 2015-16, when he captured All-OVC Newcomer honors.
Freshmen Tate Chumley, Ryan Davis and Nick Wolf each earned a spot in the UT Martin lineup after strong qualifying rounds. Chumley (Oakland High School), Davis (University School of Jackson) and Wolf (Father Ryan High School) will all make their collegiate debuts after highly decorated prep careers.
Four Skyhawks will also take part in the Murray State Invitational as individuals. That list includes senior Zach Haynes (76.1 scoring average in 2016-17), junior Cameron Story (75.9 scoring average last year), sophomore Jack Story (75.1 scoring average in 2016-17) and sophomore Peyton Dix, who transferred from the University of Memphis after a stellar prep career at Briarcrest Christian School.
