CHARLESTON, SC – University of Tennessee at Martin senior quarterback Troy Cook has been to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) preseason watch list for the CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy. Cook stands as the lone Ohio Valley Conference player on the 42-person list of returning performers from the Football Championship Subdivision.
The 2017 CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy is a 22-inch K-9 optic crystal tower with an eight-inch crystal football on top. All FCS players are eligible for the award. The award winner will be announced on January 10, 2018.
Cook earned his third preseason accolade with selection to the watch list, going preseason all-conference from College Sports Madness and the OVC. The gunslinger returns for his senior campaign after a strong 2016 season under center where he completed 166 of 298 passes for 2,321 yards while tossing 22 touchdowns. He ranked 12th nationally in passing yards per completion (13.98), 22nd in passing touchdowns (22), 26th in yards per pass attempt (7.79) and 29th in passing efficiency (137.4).
A native of Miami, Fla., Cook started in 10 games under center while ranking in the OVC top-10 in three different categories including third in pass efficiency, fifth in passing average per game and sixth in total offense. As a whole, he notched seven multi-touchdown performances while eclipsing the 300-yard mark twice during the season. Arguably his best game came against Tennessee State when he completed 27-of-39 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns.
Cook and the Skyhawks will officially open the 2017 regular season at home on Thursday, Aug. 31 against Clarion University at Hardy M. Graham Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. For individual game or season tickets, call the UT Martin ticket office at 731-881-7207.
