MARTIN, Tenn. – With critical position for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament at stake, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will head out on the road to take on Eastern Illinois in what is the first of three straight weekend series where the Skyhawks square off with a squad that is directly above them in the standings.
UT Martin (21-23, 8-13 OVC) is coming off back-to-back mid-week victories over Union and Alabama A&M and they will look to carry some of that momentum into conference play. The Skyhawks are 20-38 all-time versus the Panthers, but have enjoyed recent successes as UT Martin took two-out-of-three in both 2015 and 2016.
The Skyhawks have used a balanced attack offensively picking up solid contributions from multiple guys down the stretch. Creighton Eldridge is one of the hottest hitters in the conference improving his batting average by 70 points in a two-week span. The Mansfield, Texas native is hitting .319 on the year, while belting out 8 home runs and driving in a team-high 29 runs.
Eastern Illinois (16-29, 9-12 OVC) is also one of the hottest teams in the conference recording wins in six of their last seven OVC games including a three-game sweep of Eastern Kentucky and picking up two wins at Morehead State. Jimmy Govern leads the way for the Panthers offensively batting .350 with seven homers and 35 RBI’s.
The Skyhawks are expected to send out what has been a much improved rotation over the past several weeks. Freshman Winston Cannon (4-3, 5.93 ERA) is expected to get the call on Friday, while Dalton Westfall (4-4, 4.87 ERA) will toe the rubber on Saturday and Peyton Cain (1-4, 4.63 ERA) will likely be the starter for Sunday’s game.
The Panthers will send out right-hander Brendon Allen (1-6, 8.54 ERA) on Friday and Michael McCormick (1-4, 5.98 ERA) on Saturday, while the Sunday starter for Eastern Illinois is still to be determined.
First pitch on Friday is slated for 3 p.m., while both Saturday and Sunday have a 1 p.m. start time. Fans are encouraged to watch all three games on the OVC Digital Network which can be found by following the link at the top of the page.
