The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will open a big six-game homestand on Tuesday, April 18 when playing host to nationally ranked power Ole Miss. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 5 p.m. with admission costing $5.
The Skyhawks (31-13) enter the contest looking to avenge an early season loss to Ole Miss, falling to the then No. 23 ranked Rebels in the Red & Blue Classic 10-7 on March 5. The contest will mark the 14th meeting between two programs with Ole Miss holding a 9-4 series advantage. Meanwhile the Skyhawks have protected its field in its past two home matchups against the Rebels at Bettye Giles Field, picking up victories against the regional foe during the 2013 and 2014 seasons while winning three of the last five matchups overall.
UT Martin currently ranks first in the nation with 131 total stolen bases while ranking second in stolen bases per game with 2.98. Additionally, the Skyhawks rank 24th nationally in scoring with 5.82 runs per game and 34th with a .309 batting average. Senior Carly Gonzales paces the Skyhawks with a .386 batting average out of the leadoff spot while ranking sixth in the country with 37 stolen bases and first in the OVC in runs scored with 42.
The Skyhawks are led in the pitching circle by senior Brooke Kennedy (16-3, 2.62 ERA) who ranks as one of the program’s most decorated pitchers. Kennedy ranks fourth in program history with 44 career victories while sitting third in strikeouts, sixth in appearances and eighth in innings pitched. Sophomore Sara Hooten (8-4, 2.48 ERA) serves as the team’s other primary starter with Seeley Layne (3-2, 3.98 ERA) and Samantha Scott (3-4, 3.74 ERA) appearing out of the bullpen.
Ole Miss (30-13) enters the contest nationally ranked after previous sitting No. 22 before sweeping No. 11 LSU over the weekend. The Rebels boast a .311 batting average behind leadoff hitter Elantra Cox who ranks fourth in the nation with 69 hits and seventh nationally with a .473 batting average while pacing the squad with 38 runs scored. Meanwhile, Ashton Lampton leads the team with six home runs and 32 runs scored.
The Rebels are led in the pitching circle by Kaitlin Lee (12-6, 2.07 ERA) with six shutouts and 138.1 innings of work. Morgan Bruce (8-4, 2.56 ERA) and Alyssa Clayton (6-2, 2.80 ERA) have also combined for 18 starts on the season while combining for five shutouts in the circle.
