LEXINGTON, Ky. – Trailing just 3-0 after six innings, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team was looking to comeback against the No. 10 team in the country, but they could not find a key hit in the late innings, as the Southeastern Conference contender Kentucky took the victory 8-0.

Wildcat senior Zach Reks put the home team ahead early, as he homered off of UT Martin starting pitcher Peyton Cain in the first inning to give Kentucky the 1-0 advantage. The Skyhawks put two runners on in the top of the second but were unable to find the tying run.

Josh Hauser reached base in the top of third on a walk and advance to third on a single from Tyler Albright. However, Albright was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double and Wildcat starter Zack Thompson was able to put away Skyhawk senior Ryan Helgren on strikes in the next at-bat to strand Hauser at third.

Dan Kerwin led off the fourth with a single and was moved around to third by Tanner Wessling’s fourth double of the season before both runners were again stranded thanks to some good pitching from Thompson. Kentucky tacked on an additional run in their half of the fourth to give them the 2-0 advantage.

Hauser singled his way on base in the fifth and then swiped his ninth bag of the year to put himself into scoring position for the second time in the contest. Unfortunately for UT Martin, Helgren bounced out to first in the next at-bat and the Skyhawks were again left scoreless.

Kentucky (23-11, 8-4 SEC) tacked on some insurance in the bottom of the fifth and then expanded their lead to 6-0 with a three-run home run off the bat of Evan White in the seventh. The UT Martin bats were held to just one hit in the final four frames, as the Wildcats took the victory 8-0.

Thompson (3-2) picked up the win for Kentucky, while Cain (0-3) took the loss for UT Martin. Jake Patzner (2.1), Shane Seckinger (2.2), Tyler Borski (1.0), Sam Folks (0.2) and Collin Edwards (0.1) all saw time on the mound for the Skyhawks.

Wessling (2-3, one walk), Hauser (1-2, two walks) and Albright (1-3, one walk) all reached base multiple times in the contest.

UT Martin will continue its trip up north with a weekend series against Wright State beginning tomorrow night April 13. First pitch from Dayton, Ohio is set for 5:30 p.m.
