UTM MEN'S TEAM WINS SECOND IN A ROW TO WRAP UP 49TH ANNUAL SPRING COLLEGE RODEO

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s team won its second straight rodeo while the women’s team established a season-high in points as the campus hosted yet another successful rodeo this week at the Ned Ray McWherter Agricultural Complex and NW (Doc) Robinson Arena.
This year was the 49th installment of the UT Martin Spring College Rodeo and was highlighted by a heartfelt salute to Coy Lutz. The former UT Martin cowboy passed away last May after a promising freshman season and was honored with an emotional tribute on Friday evening.
The UT Martin men’s team compiled a season-high 750 points, winning the rodeo by 115 points over second-place Southern Arkansas. The UT Martin women’s squad built up 305 points, finishing in second place just 40 points behind Missouri Valley College.
Houston Herbert came in first in the opening round of bareback riding, chalking up 70 points. His 70 average was also good enough to place third.
Three cowgirls dialed up points for UT Martin in breakaway roping, led by Alexandria Hancock. She split first in average (5.3) after posting the best time in the short go (2.5) and the second-best time in the opening performance (2.8). Shara Adcock finished third in both the average (5.9) and in the second round (2.9) after tallying 3.0 seconds in the first round. Rounding out the points for the UT Martin women’s team was Kenzley Wilson, who came in fourth place in both the average (7.1) and in the short go (3.7).
In steer wrestling, Colt Matthews paced UT Martin with a third-place effort in the opening round (4.8). He followed that with a 7.2 in the second round to finish fifth before ending in fourth in average (12). Robbie Van Holten also earned points, splitting sixth with his time of 6.0 seconds in the first round.
Molly Hill secured points in goat tying, posting identical times of 7.9 seconds in each of two rounds. Her average score of 15.8 was the fifth-best total while she came in fifth in the short go and sixth in the opening round.
A total of five UT Martin representatives earned points in team roping, led by dominant performances from Quentin Sawyer and Patrick Houchins. The duo placed first in average (11.2) after coming in first in the opening round (5.3) and third in the short go (5.9). The team of Tucker Kail and Matthews split third with a 13.2 average, posting a 6.6 in the short go (fourth) and a 6.6 in the opening performance (split fourth). UT Martin’s Ross Mitchell also paired up with East Mississippi’s Ethan Wheeler to place second in the opening round with a time of 6.1 seconds.
Barrel racing proved to be a key event for the UT Martin women’s team. Nealey Dalton nearly swept all three phases, placing first in average (27.39), first in the short go (13.73) and second in the first round (13.66) behind teammate Kylie Brueggeman’s time of 13.53 seconds. Madison Crow split second in the short go (17.34) before placing fourth with a 27.6 average. Megan Crow was consistent with a 13.71 in the first round (fourth in the standings) before placing sixth in the short go (13.96) and in average (27.67).
Ryan McDaniel was one of two cowboys to tally points in bull riding, as his 77 points in the short go to lead the event.
UT Martin returns to action on April 20-22 when it travels to Senatobia, Miss. for a rodeo hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College.
