April 4, 2017
JONESBORO, Ark. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team chalked up its sixth top-three finish of the year with a third-place performance at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate held at RidgePointe Country Club.
The Skyhawks held on to their third-place spot in the standings after shooting a 298 (+10) today. UT Martin rounded out the tournament with an overall score of 890 (+26), which was 10 shots behind the tournament champion Arkansas State “B” team.
“The playing conditions were ideal today – everything was absolutely perfect from the weather to the golf course,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “Hunter Richardson and Jack Story played well but for whatever reason, we mostly struggled as a team today. We have to be better moving forward.”
Richardson was responsible for three birdies today on his way to a 73 (+1). The junior out of Clarksville, Tenn. ended in a tie for third place at 217 (+1) after leading the field in par-5 scoring (4.42, -7) and ranking second in par-4 scoring (4.13, +4). For his efforts, he earned a spot on the five-man Ed Way All-Tournament team.
Story accounted for the best third-round score of any Skyhawk, firing an even-par 72 behind a team-high four birdies. He placed 14th with a total tally of 223 (+7), which was the third time in his young career that he has placed in the top-15 of a tournament.
The UT Martin trio of Austin Swafford, Gavin Shellnut and Tyler Guy each finished with identical scores of 228 (+12). Shellnut shot a 74 (+2) today while Guy (79, +7) and Swafford (80, +8) combined for four birdies during the third round.
Competing as an individual, Zach Haynes carded a 78 (+6) today on his way to a three-round total of 231 (+15).
The Skyhawks have one final tune-up before they look to defend their OVC championship, as UT Martin concludes the regular season at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate on April 10-11. The tournament is hosted by Tennessee State and will take place at Hermitage Golf Course in Hermitage, Tenn.
