SOFTBALL SKYHAWKS SET TO HOST MIDDLE TENNESSEE IN MIDWEEK SHOWDOWN

The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will take a break from Ohio Valley Conference play with a midweek contest against in-state foe Middle Tennessee on Wednesday, March 29. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Skyhawks (23-8) are looking to build upon a strong weekend where they went 3-1 to open OVC play while snapping defending champion Jacksonville State’s 31-game winning streak before sweeping Tennessee Tech on Sunday. For the weekend the squad hammered out two home runs and drove in 19 RBIs while posting strong pitching performances with a 2.85 team ERA.
Jodie Duncan paced the Skyhawks with a .583 batting average over the weekend while Carly Gonzales (.462) and Aeron Smith (.444) also posted strong weekend in the batter’s box. Sophomore Lauren Myers tallied a home run and six RBIs while Smith notched four RBIs of her own to pace the squad. The sophomore duo of Alli Fulcher and Gracyn McBride also tallied three RBIs over the weekend.
Senior hurler Brooke Kennedy (10-2, 2.99 ERA) played a big part in all three victories over the weekend. Kennedy went 2-0 on the weekend – including wins against Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech - along with a save while posting a 2.28 ERA in 15.1 innings of work.
Middle Tennessee (10-17) enters the weekend looking to snap a five-game losing streak after dropping 10 of its last 11 contests. The Blue Raiders are paced by Precious Birdsong who leads the team with a .405 batting average while swiping 14 bases. Cori Jennings (5-10, 2.31 ERA) paces the squad in the circle, holding opponents to a .239 batting average in 94.0 innings of work.
Wednesday’s contest will mark the 42nd meeting between the two programs with Middle Tennessee holding a 27-13-1 advantage. UT Martin is 7-9-1 all-time against Middle Tennessee under the direction of head coach Donley Canary.
